COLLECTION AND TRANSPORT PROCEDURES
Blood
- Collect 1 tube (4-7ml) of Heparinized (green top) or EDTA (lavender top) blood.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold packs,
except blood for HIV culture, which should be kept at room
temperature.
Bone marrow
- Collect 2 ml in EDTA or heparin.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Bronchial wash/brush or alveolar lavages
- Collect in a sterile container.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
CSF
- Collect 1 ml, if possible, in a sterile container.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Dermal -
Lesions / Vesicles
- Collect vesicle fluid with swab and,
using same swab, collect cells from base of lesion. (For non-vesicular, use swab to collect cells from base of lesion.) Place swab in M4.
Or collect with viral culturette.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Eye swab or scrapings
- Place swabs or scrapings in ViroMed transport media or collect on a viral culturette.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Fluid
- Collect 1ml in a sterile container.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Nasopharyngeal
- Collect 2 NP swabs. Place both swabs in Viral, or collect on a viral culturette.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Sputum
- Collect in a sterile container.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Stool
- Collect 1 gram in a clean container.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Swab of any infected site
- Collect on a sterile swab and place in Viral.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Cervical brush biopsy for Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
- Scraping of infected site with Digene
Cervical Sampler Brush.
- Biopsy placed immediately into Digene Specimen Transport Medium.
- Ship scrapings/brushings at room
temperature overnight. Ship biopsy frozen on dry ice overnight.
Throat
- Collect with sterile swab and place in Viral transport media, or collect on a viral culturette.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Tissue
- Place in Viral transport media immediately after collection.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Urine
Adult: Collect 5 ml in sterile container.
Infant: Collect, if possible, 1 ml in sterile container.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
Serum
- Collect blood in a red top tube or serum separator tube (SST). Allow blood to clot for 30 minutes at room temperature. Centrifuge, transfer serum to a plastic vial and refrigerate.
- Ship overnight with 1-2 cold
packs.
